Green Hills Community Center
Our rural Community Center located at 17913 Park Pl in Fountain, Florida right off of 231 the Green Hills Community Center is not known by many that do not live in the Youngstown/Fountain area but for those in the area it provides a lot as a 501(c)(3).
GREEN HILLS COMMUNITY CENTER was built in 1945, through out the years it has been a safe haven for the rural community in Fountain Florida. The center is only 4,192 sq feet but every area is used, I will walk you through the rooms and how they are used and have been for years and hope they can be for years to come.
First we contain a small but effective library that still works on a honor system with books that are donated from the local community and up kept by volunteers.
We have a full size kitchen with 2 refrigerator and stoves and many cabinets. Out of our kitchen we have had Breakfast social, and dinners for the community; but that is not what makes our kitchen so special. We also use the space in the kitchen for a community food pantry with the help of the community and USPS.
Then of course the main hall area, this area is used for many events, we have a Bingo machine that we play community Bingo for donated gifts and kick-knacks. Movie night has been going on for years, we do not get the new and greatest movies but movie night is just a night for the community to get together and watch something and enjoy popcorn and drinks. We have had weddings and baby showers and even memorials for the ones in the community we have lost.
In the back room we keep thrift store donations that are brought out for sales, but I talk about this room for it has always been there for emergencies because unfortunately in this rural area many people do not have insurance. So if there is a weather storm that does major damage or worst a fire, many people loose everything so though we can not put them all of the way back on there feet we have clothes, pots, pans, blankets and items from our thrift store that can help the person a little at least.
Outside the center we hold community thrift sales, BBQ in the summer, just had our Easter egg hunt, and getting ready for the spaghetti dinner this weekend, during the summer we try to keep events going when the kids are out of school and of course Christmas gatherings just to name a few.
Most important thing is the Community Center is a Safe-Haven for any one in need. For children that have no where else to go or the Elder or disable that just need a place to go and gather to have communication with others. Everyone in the area knows that they have a place that they can come together.
The LAST and very important thing the Community Center has is a Cemetery, it is nothing fancy just 5 acres that is up kept by the center, but means the world to the people here. For it only has one rule no one pays for a space; any community member that has lived in the area for over 1 year has the right to a space in the cemetery, no spots are held (except for a spouse of someone already buried) it is on a first come first claim bases.
This is a center where NO ONE IS PAID. We do not reimburse for gas, food, clothing everyone that works at the center are volunteers of the true word. This includes all board members, there are no fees to come to the center for most events. We do have a few special dinners and special events that we ask for donations to come to; so that we can pay the center bills. Through out the years till now the center has never had to ask for outside help but the cost are more than the community can handle this year, and we are trying our best not to have to shut the doors.
